KATHMANDU: Following heavy rainfall on Tuesday night, floods and landslides have caused additional road blockages across the country, bringing the total number of obstructed roads to five.
According to the Department of Roads, four new road sections were blocked overnight.
A glacial flood in the Lhende River, originating from Tibet, has disrupted the Galchi–Trishuli–Mailung–Syaphrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road corridor. The flood has washed away the Miteri Bridge, which connects Nepal and China at Rasuwagadhi.
The department reports that a massive flood from the Chinese side caused the destruction of the Miteri Bridge and erosion of the bordering road sections. It has not provided a timeline for when this critical border route will be reopened.
Under the Shahid Marga Road Project, the Koilabas–Lamahi and Arjhun Khola–Ghorahi–Holeri–Gharti Gaun–Thawang–Lukum roads have also been blocked.
A landslide with large boulders at Kharibot in Rolpa has made road clearance difficult, though machinery has been deployed to the site.
In Panchthar, floods in the Hewa River have obstructed the Kechana–Chandragadhi–Charali–Ilam–Phidim and Ganeshchowk–Taplejung–Olangchungola road sections. Once the water level recedes, the department plans to use machinery and laborers to resume traffic.
Similarly, in Salyan, flooding in Chorkhola has disrupted the Amelia–Tulsipur–Sheetalpati–Tharmare–Musikot road section along the Rapti Highway.
The department aims to clear the road using heavy equipment once daylight returns tomorrow.
According to the latest data from the department, currently 72 roads are operating partially (one-way), 5 are completely blocked, and 75 roads are open for two-way traffic.
