KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has sent a letter to the Police Headquarters proposing the establishment of a ‘Dalit Desk’ to support investigations and facilitate cases of discrimination, harassment, and untouchability against Dalits, with a dedicated contact person assigned.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Joint Secretary Ram Chandra Tiwari, confirmed that the letter has been dispatched to the Police Headquarters to initiate the Dalit Desk’s operations.
Tiwari also mentioned that instructions have been given to improve the functioning of the Dalit Desks already established in all 77 districts nationwide.
“The circular has been issued to assist in enforcing the law and promote good governance by creating a Dalit Desk with the active involvement of the Dalit community to address societal issues like caste discrimination,” Tiwari stated.
“We have instructed the police personnel managing these desks to operate them in a more coordinated and efficient manner.”
In a recent meeting with the Joint Political Dalit Struggle Committee officials, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak had committed to the creation of the Dalit Desk at the Police Headquarters to tackle caste-based discrimination and untouchability issues.
