DHANGADHI: A security team led by Chief District Officer Gogan Hamal, accompanied by senior officials from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the National Investigation Department, was barred by inmates from entering the site of a violent clash at Kailali Jail on Thursday night.

The altercation left one prisoner dead and 47 others injured, intensifying tensions within the severely overcrowded prison, which currently holds approximately 700 inmates despite a capacity of just 150.

Denied direct access to the incident scene, the security officials consulted with the prison administration before returning to the District Administration Office.

In response, the District Security Committee convened an emergency meeting to evaluate the situation and chart a course of action.

This deadly clash comes shortly after a previous violent incident on August 7, when five prisoners were injured, one of whom remains hospitalized.

Despite reconciliation efforts by security forces following that earlier clash, violence erupted again, highlighting persistent challenges within the facility.

The committee’s discussions are expected to focus on restoring order and addressing the root causes of unrest, including the critical issue of severe overcrowding in Kailali Jail.
