MANANG: The only road connecting the Himalayan district of Manang, the Besisahar–Chame road, has been completely blocked due to a landslide.

According to Ward Chairperson Bal Bahadur Gurung, the landslide occurred late Monday night at Hawa Danda in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality–4, obstructing the road entirely.

Because of continuous rainfall and the risk of more landslides at night, efforts to clear the road could not be initiated on Monday night, said Raj Kishor Sah Teli, Information Officer at the District Police Office.

He added that attempts to reopen the road began Tuesday morning in coordination with the Dumre-Besisahar–Chame Road Project.

The road in Chamche, Jagat, and Hawa Danda of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality–4 is frequently blocked by recurring landslides involving large boulders.

According to local resident Chandra Gurung, the landslide has also disrupted electricity service in the area.

Frequent landslides at various points along this route cause yearly blockages, making travel extremely difficult.

As this is the only access road for residents of Manang and Marsyangdi rural municipalities traveling via Besisahar to other locations, any road closure leads to major problems.

Police have urged the general public to assess road conditions before traveling during the monsoon season.
