BIRATNAGAR: Continuous rainfall has triggered landslides and floods in eastern Nepal, blocking key highways and sweeping away bridges, leaving traffic paralyzed across multiple districts.

The Dharan–Dhankuta road section has been obstructed after landslides and mudslides near Mulghat and Namaste Waterfall.

Vehicles heading towards Dhankuta were forced to return, while police said bulldozers are being used to clear the debris.

Similarly, the Hile–Pakhribas–Leguwa section of the Mid-Hill Highway has also suffered damage, halting all traffic movement.

In the Mechi Corridor, floods have swept away three bridges — the Mai Khola bridge at Belase, the Puwa Khola bridge, and the Jogmai bridge on the Kechana–Kanchenjunga road section.

The Mai Khola concrete bridge at Belase, Ilam Municipality-11, built only five years ago, collapsed completely, cutting off local travel.

Adding to the disruption, the Mechi Highway has been closed after more than 30 landslides struck in Ilam and Panchthar districts, blocking roads at multiple points.

Authorities have urged caution as road-clearing efforts continue, but resumption of normal traffic is expected to take time due to widespread damage.
