KATHMANDU: The government has begun enforcing its decision to block all social media platforms that have not completed official registration, effective immediately.

The move comes after a Supreme Court order and a recent ministerial meeting chaired by Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung.

According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, only five platforms—TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, WeTalk, and Opolive—have completed the registration process and are allowed to operate.

Platforms such as Telegram and Global Link, which are still undergoing registration, have been granted temporary permission.

However, all other major platforms, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Pinterest, Signal, Threads, WeChat, Quora, Tumblr, Clubhouse, Rumble, Mi Video, Line, Imo, Jalo, Sol, and Hamro Patro, will be blocked until they fulfill the legal requirements.

The ministry stated that the restriction will apply nationwide, warning that any unregistered platforms found operating in Nepal will face an immediate ban.

Authorities clarified that the suspension is temporary, and platforms may resume operations once they officially register and comply with national regulations.
