DHANDING: The Nepal Army opened fire after prisoners attempted to escape from Dhading District Prison by setting fires inside the facility.

According to Dhading Hospital, a man estimated to be around 75 years old was killed by gunfire.

Two others are in critical condition, while five sustained minor injuries.

Security forces said the Army was compelled to fire shots in order to stop inmates who were trying to break out during the unrest.

The incident follows political turbulence after Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane walked out of Nakkhu Prison on Wednesday amid the ongoing Gen-Z movement.

Inmates across the country have since launched protests, demanding they too be released, chanting: “If police let Rabi go, they must free us as well.”
