KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has appealed to the public to refrain from non-essential long-distance travel and remain in safe locations following forecasts of heavy and widespread rainfall across Nepal.
In a social media post on Sunday morning, PM Oli said: “The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in various parts of the country this afternoon. I request everyone to stay informed through updates from security agencies and take necessary precautions. Please avoid unnecessary travel and remain in secure areas. I also direct all security personnel to stay on high alert.”
Meteorologists reported that rainfall had already begun in several areas from Saturday night.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) also issued a warning Sunday morning, particularly alerting residents of Gandaki Province to remain vigilant due to the risk of severe weather.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many hilly areas of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces. A few other regions may also see scattered showers.
Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in some hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces.
High-altitude areas may experience light to moderate rain or snowfall.
