PM Oli to visit Annapurna Base Camp today

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to visit the Annapurna I Base Camp in Annapurna Rural Municipality-4 of Myagdi district on Tuesday.

The visit is being made to mark the 75th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Annapurna I, which stands at an altitude of 8,091 meters.

The Prime Minister will travel to the base camp via helicopter to attend a special commemorative event. Accompanying the Prime Minister will be Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey, French Ambassador to Nepal Virginie Corteval, and Minister of State for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kham Bahadur Garbuja.

At the base camp, which lies at an altitude of 4,190 meters, Prime Minister Oli will be welcomed by Annapurna Rural Municipality Chair Bharat Kumar Pun, Gandaki Province Tourism Board Chief Mani Raj Lamichhane, Maurice Herzog Trail campaigner Tej Gurung, Matthias Herzog, and Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Gandaki Chair Krishna Prasad Lamichhane.

During the program, Prime Minister Oli will unveil half-body statues of Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, the first climbers of Annapurna I, along with Sonam Wangchuk Sherpa, the first Nepali to summit the mountain. He will also inaugurate an open-air museum at the site.
