KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has stressed the importance of joint efforts from all sectors to promote dignified labor by ensuring social protection, skills development, equal opportunities, a technology-friendly work environment, and the overall well-being of workers.
In his message for World Workers’ Day, observed on May 1, Speaker Ghimire extended his best wishes to workers, labor rights advocates, trade unions, and the broader working community in Nepal.
He pointed out ongoing concerns such as child labor, gender inequality in the workplace, a lack of transparency in hiring practices, and exploitation of migrant workers. These issues, he said, highlight the need for stronger policies and better enforcement.
He described Labor Day as a symbol of unity and a reminder of the collective mission to build an inclusive and just society that respects workers’ rights.
While noting that laws exist to protect labor rights, he acknowledged that proper enforcement remains a major challenge.
Citing Article 34 of Nepal’s Constitution, he emphasized that it guarantees the right to work and outlines the state’s responsibility to ensure fair pay, decent working conditions, and social safety nets.
Ghimire also highlighted the critical role of workers in driving Nepal’s development, particularly in sectors like agriculture, construction, services, tourism, manufacturing, and foreign employment.
He reflected on the origins of Labor Day in the 1886 Chicago labor movement, which continues to inspire the global fight for workers’ dignity and rights.
