KATHMANDU: Clashes erupted between the ‘No Cable Car’ group and police in Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung on Saturday evening.
The confrontation occurred at Birendra Chowk after a torch rally by protesters returning from Kaflepati.
Both sides suffered minor injuries during the clash, as reported by local authorities.
Protesters from Madhesh Province joined the demonstration, adding to the growing opposition to the cable car project.
After the rally, several political leaders held a corner meeting, reaffirming their resolve to prevent the construction of the Pathibhara cable car at all costs.
Tensions over the project have intensified, with protesters calling on the government to halt construction and address their concerns through high-level negotiations.
Various groups and organizations, under the ‘No Cable Car’ banner, have been protesting against the project in the area, known as Mukkumlung by the indigenous Limbu people.
The protesters argue that the project would harm the environment, disrupt local culture, and threaten the livelihoods of residents.
