KATHMANDU: Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has announced that her cabinet will consist of no more than 11 ministers and will include only non-political individuals who have institutional experience and will not contest elections.

Speaking to BBC Nepali Service, she emphasized, “We are looking for non-political individuals. Only people who will not contest elections will be appointed as ministers.”

So far, three ministers have assumed office in Karki’s cabinet: Rameshwar Khanal as Finance Minister, Om Prakash Aryal as Home Minister, and Kulman Ghising as Minister of Energy, Physical Infrastructure, and Urban Development.

In addition, PM Karki has revealed plans to establish a separate commission to investigate corruption, citing the mandate of the Gen Z protests as the reason.

The commission will probe irregularities and corruption, laying the groundwork for smoother governance for the next administration.

“We will investigate the extent of corruption and irregularities. Even if we only take the process up to the point of action, it will help the next government function smoothly. We are just paving the way,” Karki told BBC Nepali.

She stated that three commissions will specifically look into the suppression of the Gen Z protests.

Initially, the commissions will be given one month to complete their work, with an additional 15 days if necessary. The cabinet had approved the formation of these commissions in a meeting yesterday.

Highlighting the limited six-month tenure of her interim government, Karki stressed that the objective is to maximize work and leave a strong administrative and procedural foundation for future governments.
