Government declares 45 people who died in Gen Z protests as martyrs

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to declare 45 individuals who lost their lives during the Gen Z movement as martyrs.

According to Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel, the Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Monday resolved to officially recognize 45 people who died during the movement on September 8 and 9 in Kathmandu and other parts of the country as martyrs on behalf of the state.

Spokesperson Kharel said that after studies conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and other concerned agencies, 45 individuals have been declared martyrs, and further studies are ongoing for additional cases.

The Cabinet also approved the “Disappeared Persons Investigation, Truth Verification, and Reconciliation Fund Regulations 2025.”

Additionally, it decided to deposit Rs 53 million from the Disaster Management Fund to provide necessary assistance to local bodies affected in Ilam, which has been declared a disaster-affected district.

The meeting also appointed Deputy Attorney Ghanashyam Ojha as a member of the Foreign Employment Tribunal.
