KATHMANDU: The Judicial Council (JC) is holding a meeting today, Sunday, despite ongoing delays in judge appointments and transfers, and the absence of one of its members currently abroad.

Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, who chairs the council, has called the meeting even as council member Damodar Khadka remains on an overseas trip. The meeting is scheduled for after 5 p.m.

According to sources, the JC may proceed with certain decisions in consultation with Khadka, who is expected to join the discussions remotely.

CJ Raut has previously pushed for a major reshuffling of judges and the appointment of several High Court justices. However, repeated meetings ended without agreement due to lack of consensus among council members.

Law Minister Ajay Chaurasiya had also requested time until July 30 to review the proposed appointments and transfers, while Khadka is only expected to return on July 29.

At present, 27 High Court judge positions — including two Chief Judge seats — remain vacant, intensifying pressure on the judiciary to act.
