KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Mohan Bahadur Basnet has publicly accused party General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa of using his influence to trigger a corruption investigation against him.
Speaking at the party’s Central Working Committee meeting on Wednesday, Basnet claimed Thapa played a direct role in pushing the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to act on the Teramax case involving him.
A central committee member present at the meeting quoted Basnet as saying, “General Secretary Gagan Thapa actively pursued the Teramox case against me, both inside the party and in Parliament. It’s because of him that the CIAA initiated the investigation.”
Visibly frustrated, Basnet warned fellow leaders that no one would remain untouched. “Sooner or later, everyone’s turn will come. No one will remain innocent,” he reportedly said.
The CIAA had earlier filed a case at the Special Court against Basnet in connection with the Teramox corruption scandal.
Basnet was released on bail after posting Rs 2.5 million.
