KATHMANDU: The political discord often seen in the Federal Parliament has now spread to its committees, as a heated confrontation erupted in the House of Representatives’ Women and Social Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

A near physical clash occurred between Committee Chairperson and UML lawmaker Kiran Kumar Sah and Maoist Centre lawmaker Kalpana Miya Kusari during a meeting held at 7 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that MP Kusari arrived late and began speaking without seeking permission from the chair. When Chairperson Sah objected, Kusari, visibly agitated, threw her nameplate and microphone in his direction. Neither object struck Sah, and no injuries were reported.

Chairperson Sah stated that the meeting had been convened to present a subcommittee report coordinated by MPs Shobha Gyawali and Sushila Sirpali Thakuri. He accused Kusari of disrupting the session and acting aggressively when he tried to restore order.

In contrast, MP Kusari alleged that Sah deliberately barred her from speaking to conceal his own errors. She said she would lodge a complaint with Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire over what she described as Sah’s arbitrary conduct.

Sah defended his handling of the situation, stating that Kusari had not followed procedure and had raised unrelated issues after arriving late, which triggered the confrontation.
