KATHMANDU: The faction within the Nepali Congress demanding a Special General Convention is holding a special assembly today at 1 PM at the Rashtriya Sabha Griha, Pradarshani Marg. The gathering aims to pressure the Central Working Committee to set a date for the convention.
Leaders say the demand is backed by signatures from 54% of General Convention representatives. The Central Working Committee meets tomorrow to decide the timeline for the 15th General Convention, a point of sharp internal dispute.
General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have insisted the regular General Convention must be held before the March 5, 2026 election—or a Special General Convention should be called. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s camp argues holding a convention before the election is impractical.
Today’s assembly is led by Gururaj Ghimire and will feature senior leaders including Narahari Acharya, Mahesh Acharya, Taranath Ranabhat, and Baldev Sharma Majgaiya. The faction held consultations with Valley and Bagmati Province leaders on Tuesday in preparation for the event.
