KATHMANDU: Mohammad Aftab Alam, a leader of the Nepali Congress, has been released from Nakkhu Prison after the High Court acquitted him in a high-profile murder case dating back to 2008.
Alam had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Rautahat District Court.
He was accused of burning people alive in a brick kiln to destroy evidence following a bomb blast during the first Constituent Assembly election.
The case had shocked the nation and became one of the most controversial criminal incidents involving a sitting Member of Parliament.
However, the High Court overturned the lower court’s ruling, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to substantiate the charges.
The court concluded that the alleged incident could not be proven during the legal proceedings.
