KATHMANDU: The group of Nepali Congress representatives who signed a petition demanding the party’s general convention has called a strategic meeting for Sunday.

According to coordinator Guru Ghimire, the meeting will take place at 12:30 PM on Sunday in Baneshwar.

Ghimire said that party representatives currently in Kathmandu — particularly those who signed the petition for a special general convention — will participate in the gathering.

The meeting is being convened with the aim of exerting pressure on the party leadership to bring forward a schedule for the regular general convention, after the Central Working Committee (CWC) showed reluctance to do so in its ongoing meetings.

Ghimire explained that since the CWC is scheduled to meet on Friday and Saturday, the decision to hold the gathering on Sunday was made to review the committee’s outcome.

“We are waiting for now. If the Central Working Committee brings the schedule through consensus, that will be good. But if not, we will meet and decide our strategy,” Ghimire said. “If the schedule comes out amicably, Sunday’s gathering will instead focus on preparing strategies for the general convention.”

He further stated that the signatories’ first priority remains the regular general convention, and their pressure campaign will continue in that direction. However, if the CWC rejects the call for a regular convention, the group will automatically shift to its second option — pursuing a special general convention.

According to Ghimire, 54 percent of the signatories have listed the regular convention as their top priority.

If the party’s central leadership fails to announce a regular timeline, the upcoming gathering will finalize strategies to push decisively for a special convention.
