KATHMANDU: The inaugural session of the Special General Convention, organized by supporters of the Nepali Congress at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, has officially commenced.

The opening ceremony was led by General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. Prior to the inauguration of the special general convention taking place on January 11 and 12, leaders and activists from various regions of the Kathmandu Valley converged at the venue, arriving in processions accompanied by music and tableaux.

For the inaugural session, a big stage has been erected in the open area of Bhrikutimandap, where thousands of leaders and party members have gathered. The vicinity surrounding the stage is adorned with flags, gates, banners, and promotional materials representing the Nepali Congress.

The special convention is presided over by Krishna Sabuj Baniya, the President of Congress Kathmandu. Following the inauguration, a closed session is scheduled for tomorrow morning at the Bhrikutimandap auditorium.

On 15th October, a request for a special convention was submitted to the central office, bearing the signatures of 54.58 percent of the convention delegates from the Congress. However, the party’s establishment faction has voiced its opposition to the special convention. The establishment faction has argued that since the timeline for the regular convention has already been established and the process is underway, the justification for convening a special convention is not relevant.
