KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has decided to stand against the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

A virtual meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held on Friday night made the decision.

In a statement issued by the party’s chief secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, Congress said that the dissolution move was contrary to the spirit of Nepal’s Constitution and the interpretation of the Supreme Court.

“This attempt to dissolve parliament goes against the vision of our Constitution and the interpretation of the honorable Supreme Court. It is not constitutionally valid at all,” the statement read.

The party further noted that the move had jeopardized democratic achievements on one hand, while raising fears that the essence and spirit of the Gen-Z movement could be undermined on the other.

The Congress reminded that President Ram Chandra Paudel, as head of state, should have concluded the process in line with the demands and sentiments of the Gen-Z generation by appointing the individual proposed by them to lead the interim government.

The statement suggested that a “solution-oriented consensus” could still be advanced through a constitutional and legitimate path if the proposed leadership was endorsed.

It further pledged that the party would support efforts to end prevailing political distortions through constitutional and democratic means.

“As the guardian and custodian of the Constitution, our responsible proposal was to make the interim government—under the leadership of the individual proposed by Gen-Z—constitutionally valid through parliamentary amendment if necessary, and for the new government to announce fresh elections. We believe this approach provides a responsible way forward for political resolution,” the statement concluded.
