Oli’s hattrick: Detailed results of the 19 new CPN (UML) office bearers

KATHMANDU: KP Sharma Oli has been elected as the chairman with a hattrick from the 11th General Convention of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), abbreviated CPN (UML). Along with Oli, 19 individuals have emerged victorious as CPN (UML) office bearers.

Oli completed his hattrick as chairman by securing 1,663 votes. This is Oli’s third term in the CPN (UML) leadership. Ishwar Pokharel, who competed against Oli for the chairmanship, had to settle for only 563 votes. Among the 19 office bearers of the CPN (UML), only two individuals from the Pokhrel faction were victorious, while all the remaining elected members belong to the Oli faction. Among the 19 office bearers, Gokarna Bista as vice chairman and Yogesh Bhattarai as deputy general secretary were victorious from the Pokhrel panel.

In the election for five posts of vice chairman, Prithvi Subba Gurung (1,737), Bishnu Prasad Paudel (1,675), Ram Bahadur Thapa (1,516), Gokarna Bista (1,368), and Raghuji Pant (1,258) were victorious.

Those who competed for vice chairmanship but were defeated include Guru Prasad Baral (1,137), Binda Pandey (921), Parshuram Meghi Gurung (461), Arun Nepal (439), Tanka Prasad Karki (358), and Bhim Prasad Acharya (265).

Similarly, while Shankar Pokhrel from Oli’s panel was victorious as general secretary, Surendra Pandey from the Pokharel faction was defeated. Pokharel was previously elected to the post of general secretary from the 10th General Convention held in Sauraha.

Pokhrel received 1,228 votes, while Pandey received only 999 votes. The vote difference between Pokhrel and Pandey was 229.

In the election for the posts of deputy general secretary, Lekhraj Bhatta won by receiving the highest number of votes. Additionally, Raghubir Mahaseth and Yogesh Bhattarai were victorious as deputy general secretaries. Bishnu Rimal, a known close companion of Chairman Oli, was defeated in the election for the post of deputy general secretary.

According to the final results of the election, Bhatta received 1,452 votes for deputy general secretary. Similarly, while Mahaseth received 1,368 votes, Bhattarai became victorious as deputy general secretary with 1,348 votes.

Rimal received only 1,091 votes. There are three positions of deputy general secretary in the CPN (UML). According to the vote results, Rimal came in fourth and was consequently defeated. Similarly, the competitor for deputy general secretary, Ananda Prasad Pokhrel, received 635 votes, while Baijanath Chaudhary received 517 votes.

In the nine secretary posts, Oli’s entire panel has emerged victorious. Among the nine posts for secretary, Mahesh Basnet received the highest number of votes. Basnet received 1,544 votes. Similarly, Padma Kumari Aryal was elected as secretary by receiving 1,530 votes. Chhabilal Bishwakarma received 1,506, Sherdhan Rai 1,503, Hikmat Kumar Karki 1,337, Khagaraj Adhikari 1,231, Yam Lal Kandel 1,185, and Rajan Bhattarai got 1,181 votes.

There were 2,263 general convention representatives in the CPN (UML) 11th General Convention. Thirty-six representatives did not participate in the voting.
