KATHMANDU: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the legality of travel restrictions and passport blocks imposed on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four other officials, including former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, former Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi, former Chief of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and former Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabilal Rijal.

The restrictions, which prevent Oli from leaving the Kathmandu Valley and block passports of the other officials, were imposed following recommendations by the high-level Inquiry Commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which investigated humanitarian and material losses during the September 8-9 Gen Z protests.

The government acted on the Commission’s suggestions, enforcing movement limits and passport blocks without the officials’ consent.

The petition, submitted by lawyer Dr. Premraj Silwal, was filed in the public interest rather than on behalf of Oli personally.

The Supreme Court administration is currently reviewing the petition and will decide on its registration after study.
