KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has reaffirmed her commitment to holding the upcoming elections in a peaceful and fear-free environment.
On Thursday, she met with a delegation from the ASEAN Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) and informed them of the government’s dedication to ensuring free, fair, and secure elections.
ANFREL is an international network of election observers headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Karki emphasized that the government is focused on organizing elections in a manner where not a single drop of blood is spilled and no one is injured.
Members of the delegation expressed confidence that a government led by someone with extensive experience as a judge and Chief Justice would ensure independent and impartial elections.
The delegation stated, “Your judicial experience shows that democratic restructuring is possible through fair elections and that it will safeguard democratic institutions.
Responding to the presence of international observers, Prime Minister Karki noted that it made the electoral process feel already underway.
She said, “Our main focus is to conduct elections. Civil society and observers also play a crucial role in creating a healthy election environment. Your presence gives the sense that the process has begun.”
Alongside ANFREL representatives, officials and members of Nepal’s domestic election observer network were also present.
The delegation suggested giving special attention to voter education, especially as there is significant enthusiasm among first-time young voters.
The government is accelerating preparations to successfully conduct the elections scheduled for March 5 next year.
