KATHMANDU: In Tuesday’s House of Representatives session, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sobita Gautam alleged that some individuals who traveled on visit visas during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Spain trip have not returned to Nepal.

“There are reports that some people, who went under the pretext of attending the program alongside the honorable prime minister in Spain, have not come back. We do not accuse any specific individual, but this is a very serious matter,” Gautam said.

She further criticized the government’s response to the controversy, condemning the formation of a weak administrative committee led by unsuitable officials, including junior staff, instead of a high-level inquiry commission.

“We strongly object to the government’s decision to form a low-level committee for an issue that affects the lives of Nepali citizens and the country’s international reputation. Our demand remains unchanged — a high-level inquiry commission must be formed without delay,” she stated.

During the same session, CPN-UML lawmaker Damodar Paudel Bairagi questioned the need to verify these allegations before raising them in parliament. He cautioned against making unsubstantiated accusations or using such matters as a reason to boycott the assembly.

“If a respected member claims that some people were left behind during the prime minister’s Spain visit, the basis of such a claim must be clear and confirmed. Parliament is not a place for unverified allegations,” Bairagi said.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had traveled to Spain from Asar 14 to 20 (June 28 to July 4) to participate in the United Nations’ 4th International Conference on Financing for Development.
