KATHMANDU: Central Committee member of Nepali Congress, Govindaraj Pokharel, highlighted on Wednesday that Dr. Shekhar Koirala has been persistently advocating for holding the party’s 15th regular general convention in December, even as many party leaders and officials favored postponement.
Speaking at the ongoing Central Committee meeting, Pokharel said, “While most officials were convinced that the convention should be deferred, Dr. Shekhar consistently pushed for a December schedule, taking this agenda to colleagues across districts. I witnessed discussions and disagreements between Party President Deuba and Dr. Shekhar on this issue. At that time, Dr. Shekhar stood alone like a solitary Jupiter advocating for the December convention.”
Pokharel added that the proposal made by General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa now has the potential to unite party leaders on a common timeline for the convention.
He emphasized that Nepali Congress, currently at a crossroads, must chart the right path forward, recalling B.P. Koirala’s vision to guide Nepal toward a stronger democratic political system.
Pokharel stressed that the 15th general convention should establish a concrete work plan for modernizing the party and nation.
