KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress convention delegates are set to submit the signatures they have collected to push for a party special convention tomorrow (Tuesday).
Central committee member and leader of the signature campaign, Pratima Gautam, said the signatures will be submitted ahead of the upcoming Central Committee meeting.
There is growing demand within the party to hold a special convention and change the leadership if a regular convention is not feasible.
Party rules stipulate that a special convention must be held if 40% of convention delegates or central committee members submit such a request through signatures.
Gautam confirmed that 51% of the required signatures have already been collected.
“Submission was initially planned for today, but since the Performance Committee did not meet, we are now preparing to submit the signatures tomorrow, ahead of the Central Committee meeting,” she said.
Following the Gen Z unrest on September 8–9, debates over leadership change have intensified within the Nepali Congress.
Calls are being made for Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to step down and for the party to hold a special convention.
Some members have also questioned Deuba’s participation in elections announced for March 5, 2026.
Meanwhile, the party’s four-year term from the December 2021 convention is nearing its end, and regular membership renewal and distribution processes have not been fully completed.
The active membership management committee, led by General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, has not yet finalized these tasks.
