KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire met with President Ram Chandra Paudel today at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas.

According to the President’s Secretariat, Speaker Ghimire briefed the Head of State on Nepal’s planned participation in the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, scheduled to take place in Geneva from July 29 to 31. Ghimire is scheduled to fly to Geneva on July 27 to attend the global event.

During the meeting, Speaker Ghimire is also reported to have raised concern over President Paudel’s decision to return the Constitutional Council (First Amendment) Bill to the Federal Parliament for reconsideration.

The President had sent the bill back to Parliament on Thursday, citing constitutional and procedural grounds.

Sources familiar with the meeting said Ghimire sought clarification on the reasons behind the return and urged the President to uphold the spirit of parliamentary supremacy.
