KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has initiated talks with chief whips of major political parties to resolve the ongoing obstruction in Parliament. The House has remained paralyzed for six straight sessions due to protests led by opposition parties.
The opposition bloc is demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate alleged human trafficking and the misuse of visit visas. The government’s failure to address these demands has deepened the deadlock.
Opposition parties have accused the ruling coalition—particularly the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—of attempting to downplay the severity of the visa scandal and protect the home minister.
They argue that the government’s refusal to investigate the case undermines accountability and public trust. Following the budget presentation on May 29, the next House meeting was scheduled for June 3. However, no session has proceeded between June 3 and June 9 due to continued disruptions.
In an effort to break the stalemate, Speaker Ghimire has called for a new session on Wednesday and resumed dialogue with chief whips.
