Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has issued an order directing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to explain why a vote of confidence was not sought.

The order came in response to a writ petition filed after the Janata Samajwadi Party, Nepal withdrew its support for the government.
On Friday, the court issued the notice to show cause. The writ was filed by advocate Birendra KC, and the bench, led by Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel, issued the order requiring the government to explain its position.

Additionally, the court issued an order naming the opposition for discussions related to interim orders. The Janata Samajwadi Party, Nepal had announced the withdrawal of its support for the government on 16 July 2025.

Following this, Prime Minister Oli has not sought a vote of confidence. The government maintains that a vote of confidence is not necessary simply because a party withdraws its support.
