KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict today (Wednesday) on the controversial appointments made to constitutional bodies through ordinances that amended the Constitutional Council Act.
A total of 52 officials were appointed in two phases— December 2020 and July 2021—under ordinances issued by the then government.
The appointments, made after amending the Constitutional Council Act to allow decisions by majority, had drawn widespread criticism and legal challenges.
Between December 2020, and July 2021, a total of 15 writ petitions were filed against these appointments.
Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi, along with advocates Om Prakash Aryal, Kirtinath Sharma Poudel, and Dr. Punya Prasad Khatiwada, were among those who filed the petitions. The petitioners claimed that the appointments violated the Constitution and prevailing laws.
Although hearings on the case concluded on May 15, 2025, the verdict was initially scheduled for May 28.
However, following extensive deliberations among Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut and Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Kumar Chudal, and Nahakul Subedi, the announcement was postponed to July 2, 2025.
