KATHMANDU: A cadre of the Youth Association, affiliated with CPN (UML), has been arrested on charges of setting fire to the residence of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
The arrested individual has been identified as Sonam Thebe, a permanent resident of Sirijangha Rural Municipality-1, Taplejung, who was currently living in Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, Thebe was arrested from the Maharajgunj area on Monday.
“He was taken into custody from the Maharajgunj area and is currently being held at the district police detention center,” SP Bhattarai said.
SP Bhattarai stated that preliminary investigation shows Thebe played a leading role in the arson attack on former President Bhandari’s house.
He added that Thebe has a criminal background, and further investigation is underway.
“He is being investigated on charges of public offense, vandalism, and arson,” Bhattarai confirmed.
Thebe is also accused of extorting money from hoteliers, nightlife business operators, and land brokers in the Dhumbarahi area through threats and intimidation.
“There are reports that he extorted money under the guise of gangster activity and harassed local businessmen,” Bhattarai said.
“A thorough investigation is being conducted, and we will ensure the strictest possible action,” he added.
Before becoming President, Bidya Devi Bhandari served as the Vice-Chair of the CPN (UML).
Having completed two terms as Nepal’s head of state, she has now resumed active involvement in UML politics.
Police are currently verifying *Thewe’s rank and position within the Youth Association*, SP Bhattarai added.
