KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has called on leaders who left the party to return, saying no prior permission is needed.

Speaking at a Press Chautari Nepal event in Kathmandu on Monday, he emphasized that those seeking to return must respect the party’s policies and leadership, and should not come with intentions to create disputes or divisions.

“Regarding those who separated from UML, the Central Committee has already decided: returning to your home doesn’t require anyone’s permission,” Pokharel said.

“Returning members will be given responsibilities based on their capabilities, but the condition is full agreement on party policies and leadership,” he added.

Pokharel added that the party environment has been made conducive for reunification, and the door will always remain open for those who agree on these principles.

On former President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, he noted that she is a shared figure and should continue in that role for now; if she wishes to be active in politics, the party will decide accordingly.

The call comes amid growing debates within UML on “unity and reunification,” with the party actively encouraging separated leaders to return through a “homecoming campaign.”

Pokharel also urged those aspiring for leadership to compete fairly in the party’s upcoming general convention.
