KATHMANDU: A heated exchange erupted in the House of Representatives on Sunday between lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Nepali Congress over the ongoing visit visa scandal.
The verbal clash occurred between RSP MP D.P. Aryal and Congress MP Ramhari Khatiwada. As soon as the session began, RSP and RPP lawmakers stood in protest, demanding an investigation into the misuse of visit visas.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire gave Aryal the floor, who expressed outrage over a statement made by Khatiwada in a previous session.
Aryal challenged Khatiwada to present evidence proving someone had left the country using a visit visa via his company, Sumire Tours and Travels, and never returned. He insisted that he was a hardworking person and not involved in corruption, claiming the accusations were baseless.
Aryal also demanded that Khatiwada’s remarks from the previous session be removed from the parliamentary record.
In response, Congress MP Khatiwada said he had not named any specific lawmaker and compared Aryal’s reaction to someone, “who acted as if the leg being cut belonged to him the moment the talk of cutting a thief’s leg came up.”
He also criticized efforts to intimidate Parliament when calls for investigation were raised and demanded an inquiry into how 209 manpower companies received permits unlawfully.
Khatiwada, in turn, demanded Aryal’s words be expunged from the record.
Following the exchange, Speaker Ghimire urged lawmakers to speak responsibly and avoid using unparliamentary language or directly naming individuals.
Despite his appeal, RSP and RPP lawmakers walked out of the session in protest.
