KATHMANDU: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has emphasized the need to modernize the Nepal Police to keep pace with evolving challenges in crime investigation and technological advancements.

He made the remarks during the “70th Police Day and Tribute to Fallen Police Officers” ceremony.

Aryal noted that the Ministry of Home Affairs has the primary responsibility to provide sufficient resources to the Nepal Police to strengthen internal security.

He assured that the government is vigilant to ensure resource availability for the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

The Home Minister reflected on the protests held on September 8-9, stating that the Nepal Police faced organizational and personal equipment looting and arson, resulting in resource shortages affecting citizens.

He stressed that the police must recover, maintain high morale, perform effectively, and deliver justice to victims through impartial investigations.

Aryal highlighted recent religious and communal incidents in certain districts, noting these threaten societal harmony and pose additional challenges to national security.

He called for timely measures to prevent such activities.

Police Inspector General Chandra Kuber Khapung stated that the police remain committed to addressing current and emerging security challenges.

Despite difficult conditions, the force continues to ensure public safety and maintain citizen trust.

He emphasized the growing demand for police presence across the country, citing 939 new unit requests and over 400 office upgrades, requiring an additional 25,000 personnel.

Khapung stressed the need for internal reform and professional development within the police.
