KATHMANDU: Nepal’s retired army chiefs are participating in the 10th Nepal–India Chiefs’ Conference, hosted by the Indian Army, with discussions focused on bilateral military relations. Four retired Nepali Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) are attending, in what observers see as a timely initiative ahead of Nepal’s elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Indian media reported that Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi briefed the Nepali retired army chiefs on emerging challenges in modern warfare. The conference is part of a regular “Chiefs’ Conclave,” held alternately in Nepal and India, with India hosting the tenth edition this year. The host country largely sets the agenda, though discussions typically focus on bilateral ties, military cooperation, and ceremonial exchanges, such as conferring the honorary rank of General to each other’s former chiefs.

Eight retired Indian chiefs, including VK Singh, governor of Mizoram and ex-army chief, are attending. Families of the late Indian Field Marshal Shyam Manekshaw and General Bipin Rawat were also invited. The Nepali former chiefs are expected to stay until Sunday.

The conference coincides with heightened international interest in Nepal. Recent visits by US and regional officials underscore Nepal’s strategic relevance amid regional rivalry and upcoming elections. The post-election scenario is expected to influence Nepal’s military diplomacy and its engagement with regional security challenges.
