TAPLEJUNG: A landslide buried a house in Angkhop, Sidingba Rural Municipality of Taplejung, injuring five members of the same family.

The house belonging to local resident Hasta Bahadur Katuwal was hit around 1 AM last night.

His 50-year-old wife Thag Maya Katuwal was seriously injured, while four others — Hasta Bahadur himself, his son Jagat Katuwal, daughter-in-law Saraswata Katuwal, and daughter Samjhana Katuwal — sustained minor injuries, according to Ward Chairperson Ratna Bahadur Khatri.

The landslide occurred after water from an irrigation canal overflowed into the fields above the house, loosening the soil and triggering the slide. Though there was no rainfall at night, locals said the blocked canal water led to the incident.

The couple’s son and daughter-in-law, who were sleeping in a nearby shed, immediately rescued the parents after the house was buried.

Thag Maya, who suffered serious injuries, is being transported for further treatment via ambulance.

A police team from Sabla Police Post has arrived at the site and begun an investigation and damage assessment.
