Kanchha Sherpa, a member of first successful Everest expedition, passes away

KATHMANDU: Kanchha Sherpa, a member of the first successful Mt Everest climbing team, has passed away at the age of 92.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest in May, 1953. Sherpa was involved as a porter in that expedition team and he had reached above eight thousand metres.

He worked in the mountaineering field for two decades. Sherpa was the only surviving member of the first successful expedition team on Mt Everest.

The Sherpa family stated that Kanchha Sherpa passed away today at his residence in Kapan, Kathmandu.
