KATHMANDU: Supreme Court of Nepal on Monday dismissed 46 petitions challenging the retirement age policies at the federal and provincial levels. A joint bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Sunil Kumar Pokharel ruled against the petitions, citing a prior decision by the Constitutional Bench on the matter.
“The dispute concerned the retirement age of employees transferred from the federal government to provincial administrations. However, since the Constitutional Bench had already ruled on this issue, the petitions were dismissed,” Supreme Court spokesperson Achyut Koirala said.
The Constitutional Bench had previously upheld a mandatory retirement age of 58 for employees working in provincial governments. The legal dispute arose after federal law mandated retirement at 58, while some provinces, including Madhesh and Bagmati, set the limit at 60. Sudurpaschim Province, however, maintained the 58-year cap. Government employees had sought an extension to 60 years.
