CHENNAI: At least 36 people, including children, were killed in a crush during a political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials confirmed.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday at a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur district.
Tens of thousands of supporters had gathered for the event, which was delayed by several hours, according to local media.
Television footage showed chaotic scenes, with people fainting in the densely packed crowd.
State Health Minister Ma Subramanian told reporters the death toll included at least 16 women, nine men, and six children.
More than 50 people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin confirmed that some attendees fainted during the crush and were hospitalized.
He said doctors from nearby districts had been called in for support.
Stalin announced compensation of one million rupees ($11,300; £8,400) for the families of the deceased and pledged a formal inquiry into the tragedy.
A grieving relative spoke to ANI outside a hospital: “My brother’s two children were there. Two boys. The elder one passed away, the younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in the ICU. What should I do?”
In an online statement, Vijay said his heart was “broken” and he was in “unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.”
He extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the tragedy as “unfortunate” and “deeply saddening” in a post on X.
Stampedes of this scale are not uncommon in India.
Similar incidents have claimed lives this year alone, including during the Kumbh Mela Hindu festival and outside a cricket stadium.
