KATHMANDU: India’s East Bengal Club has lifted the title of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Club Championship football tournament organised for the first time by SAFF.
In the final match held today at Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar, East Bengal defeated Nepal’s APF Club 3–0 to win the tournament title.
In East Bengal’s win, captain Fazila Equaput scored two goals while Shilkidevi Hanam scored one goal. Captain Equaput gave her team the first lead by scoring in the 22nd minute of the game.
Nepal’s goalkeeper Anjana Rana Magar and Geeta Rana’s lack of coordination allowed East Bengal to take advantage of the opportunity, with captain Fazila successfully scoring.
Then in the 35th minute of the game, East Bengal doubled their team’s lead. Shilkidevi Hanam scored the goal for them. From a corner by Sarita Yumnam, Asha Lata crossed the ball and Shilkidevi scored with a header.
Then in the opening minutes of the second half, East Bengal scored their third goal, securing victory in the competition.
East Bengal captain Fazila scored her second personal goal and the team’s third. No further goals were scored and ultimately East Bengal defeated APF 3–0 to win the championship.
The championship, which has been running since December 5, saw the participation of five nations. Along with the two teams playing in the final, there were Karachi City FC from Pakistan, Nasir Sports Academy from Bangladesh, and Transport United from Bhutan.
