KATHMANDU: Around two thousand domestic and foreign tourists stranded in the Himalayan regions of the country due to continuous rainfall and heavy snowfall have been rescued.
Because the snowfall occurred during the peak trekking season, many local, domestic, and international trekkers were trapped in high-altitude areas of Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Gorkha.
As of Thursday morning, authorities reported the safe rescue of around 1,500 local and domestic tourists and over 200 foreign visitors.
Some tourists still trapped in deep snow are being rescued.
Manang district reported the highest number of rescues, as state authorities mobilized emergency response teams immediately after the disaster.
Rescue operations in Tilicho, Khangsar, Pisang, and Upper Manang have been completed.
More than 1,500 domestic and foreign tourists awaiting rescue in Tilicho, Upper Manang, and surrounding areas have been evacuated.
Currently, except for a few tourists and locals who chose to remain voluntarily, everyone has been rescued.
The rescued tourists have now reached destinations such as Chame and Besisahar.
Due to blocked roads caused by snowfall, vehicle shortages were reported in the district.
15 jeeps and 2 buses were mobilized to transport the rescued tourists safely.
The rescue efforts were successful with the joint support of the Nepal Army’s New Bhairavi Battalion stationed in Manang, the Armed Police Force, and local residents.
