MANANG: Authorities and local stakeholders in Manang have begun coordinated efforts to reopen trekking routes to Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass after continuous snowfall severely disrupted movement in the region.
The District Administration Office, local governments, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Manang Unit, and tourism entrepreneurs have jointly mobilized equipment and manpower to clear the snow-covered trails.
Chief District Officer Nabaraj Paudyal said heavy snowfall over the past few days had blocked popular trekking routes, halting the journeys of both domestic and international tourists.
“We are working to open the roads and make travel safe again,” he said, adding that guided tourists are being allowed to proceed gradually as weather conditions improve.
According to ACAP Manang Chief Dhak Bahadur Bhujel, the trail up to Tilicho Base Camp (4,000 meters) has already been cleared, and preparations are underway to reopen the route up to Tilicho Lake (4,919 meters)—one of the world’s highest lakes.
Trekkers without licensed guides are still restricted from entering upper areas due to safety risks, communication breakdowns, and avalanche threats.
Meanwhile, efforts are also ongoing to restore access to the Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), which connects Manang and Mustang districts.
Around 200 foreign trekkers reportedly started toward the pass on Saturday, though officials said thick snow and poor communication remain major obstacles.
Local authorities said the reopening is crucial to resume trekking during the peak tourist season, which runs from October to early December.
They urged all travelers to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines while trekking through snow-affected regions.
