KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall triggered landslides that blocked major roads in Kalikot and Baitadi districts on Saturday night, disrupting travel ahead of Gaura Parba celebrations.
The Karnali Highway was obstructed at Gaganekhola in Kalikot following a landslide caused by incessant rain, according to Jumla Road Division Office Chief Dipendra Kumar Chaudhary. He said travelers have been advised to exercise caution during the rainy season and avoid night travel.
Similarly, the Dehimadau–Giregada road section in Baitadi has been blocked by a landslide near Sundarkhali, Dasharathchand Municipality-2. Large boulders brought down by the slide have complicated clearance efforts.
“Although a JCV was mobilized until last night, it was unable to clear the debris due to the size of the stones,” said Baitadi Police Spokesperson Balram Pandey. He added that excavators would be deployed today to reopen the road.
The disruption has left many Gaura Parba travelers stranded across Sudurpaschim Province. Police said traffic will resume only after the debris is fully removed, which may take some time.
