KATHMANDU: The Montha cyclone, developing over the Bay of Bengal, has caused heavy rainfall in Nepal over the past 24 hours, with Morang’s Sundar Haraicha recording the highest 210 millimeters.

According to official records, Saptari’s Baramjhiya received 143 millimeters of rainfall.

Dinkar Kayastha, Information Officer at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, said the cyclone has mainly affected Madhesh and Koshi provinces, though rainfall and cloudy conditions were reported in Bagmati and other provinces as well.

He described the rain as intense, noting that rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters is categorized as extremely heavy.

In the last 24 hours, many districts recorded heavy rain: Jhapa received 93.6 mm, Udayapur 97.6 mm, while over two dozen rainfall stations reported 50–80 mm.

In Kathmandu, 40 mm was recorded and in Lalitpur, 72 mm.

Kayastha added that the cyclone has now weakened into a low-pressure system near India’s Madhya Pradesh, and its impact in Nepal is expected to continue until this evening before conditions gradually improve.

Nepal is also partially influenced by a low-pressure system from the western wind and Arabian Sea.

Currently, cloudy conditions prevail across most parts of the country, with light to moderate rainfall in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, some areas in Lumbini Province, and very heavy rain in select locations.
