NAWALPUR: Life in Nawalpur has been affected due to cold wave since Sunday evening. Thick fog along with frost has affected normal life in the district which lies in interior southern parts (Madhes) of the country’s geography.

Although mercury has dipped in the district in absence of explicit sunlight causing increasing cold, the foggy weather mixed with mist has caused trouble to daily life.

With the rise in cold due to the frost that occurred since Sunday night, locals have not normally come outside the home except for essential works.

Kishor Lamsal, a grocery shop owner in Gaindakot, shared that quite a limited customers came to his shop with the fall in temperature.

“Owing to the cold wave and subsequent chilling effects, people have not stepped outside. We are not being able to open the grocery shop”, he said.

As the cold increased, people have started lighting fires at intersections to keep them warm.

With the abrupt rise in cold since Sunday evening this year, Khugendra Kandel, a resident of Gaindakot municipality-2, urged the local government to make arrangements for city dwellers to keep warm throughout the winter season.

Manoj KC of Gaindakot-1 said that this year the cold wave has lasted longer than the past. “On Monday night, the cold was so intense; it felt as if it was raining, which made the winter even harsher,” he said. “It has been four days without sunlight, and how long it will last is uncertain”, KC added.

Deputy Chief District Officer of Nawalpur, Chiranjibi Rana shared that there is sufficient quantity of firewood in the forest which can be distributed during the cold.

“With the winter set in, we communicated to the municipalities in the district requesting them to ask for firewood”, he said, adding, “No municipality has so far requested specific amount of firewood or logs from us”.
