KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Deepak Singh has been arrested from the premises of the Kathmandu District Police Range in Bhadrakali this evening.
Singh had reached the police office to meet Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) Chair Kamal Thapa, who was taken into custody earlier today during a royalist demonstration at Narayanchaur.
Thapa was leading a protest organized by royalist groups demanding the reinstatement of Nepal as a Hindu state and the return of the monarchy.
Security forces intervened to disperse the gathering, citing public order concerns, and arrested several protestors, including the former Deputy Prime Minister.
Singh’s arrest has further escalated tensions among pro-monarchy factions.
In response to the crackdown, RPP Chair Rajendra Lingden, had earlier warned of a shutdown of Kathmandu if the government continued suppressing peaceful protests.
“The government must stop treating royalist voices as criminal dissent,” Lingden stated earlier today.
“If this continues, we will be compelled to intensify our movement and paralyze the capital.”
Royalist protests have been growing in recent weeks, with activists and political leaders pressing for a national referendum on the monarchy and Hindu statehood.
The arrests of Thapa and Singh have sparked outrage among supporters, who are vowing further demonstrations in the coming days.
Security remains tight in several parts of Kathmandu as authorities brace for potential unrest.
