KATHMANDU: Kamal Thapa, Chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal and a prominent royalist leader, this morning issued a sarcastic statement on Facebook criticizing the government’s response to yesterday’s royalist protest at Narayanchau, where he was briefly arrested.

In his statement, Thapa said, “Thank you, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, for your barbaric and inhuman behavior.”

He added, “We did not enter prohibited areas nor break any laws.” Thapa further emphasized, “Repression and bans cannot kill ideas. Our resolve for liberation from corrupt rulers and systems, and the restoration of a Hindu nation and monarchy, has only grown stronger.”

Thapa was detained by police during the protest but was released later the same day. Deepak Singh, another royalist leader and Member of Parliament from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, was also arrested while visiting Thapa and freed soon after.

The royalist protesters condemned the government’s crackdown, maintaining that their demonstration was peaceful and lawful.

They accused authorities of using repression to silence dissenting voices.
