NEPALGUNJ: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has called on the government to immediately begin the process of amending the constitution.

Speaking at the Nepali Congress Regional Conference in Banke, he emphasized the need to fulfill the seven-point agreement between Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

Thapa stressed the importance of establishing an electoral system that allows a single party to win a majority, criticizing the coalition-based system for weakening Nepal’s political stability.

He said constitutional amendments are necessary to pave the way for a stable five-year government and to make the parliament and government more inclusive.

He also advocated for reducing government expenses by cutting down the number of ministers and deputy positions at the federal and provincial levels.

Thapa highlighted the need to improve federalism through constitutional amendments rather than weakening the federal democratic republic.

He reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to the federal democratic republic and dismissed calls for monarchy, stating that the monarchy was never constitutional.

Other Congress leaders at the event also emphasized that the federal democratic republic remains strong.
