KATHMANDU: A group of prominent Nepali intellectuals has issued a joint statement strongly condemning the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran, calling the attacks a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a continuation of American imperialist intervention.
The statement, released on Asar 9 (June 23), refers to the heavy bombing carried out by U.S. warplanes on three Iranian locations on the night of June 21. It states that the strikes targeted Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, which is under direct supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Describing the attack as part of a long history of U.S. imperialism dating back to the 19th century, the signatories criticized America’s pattern of toppling governments, controlling resources, and launching brutal assaults on any country that opposes its political and economic interests.
The statement links the Iran strikes to past American and Israeli military interventions in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Palestine, and Lebanon—many of which, it says, led to mass destruction and human suffering.
It also accuses Israel of attacking Iran to distract from its ongoing offensive in Gaza and blames the U.S.–Israel–NATO alliance for threatening the sovereignty of smaller nations.
The signatories warn that this escalation could destabilize West Asia further and disrupt the global supply of oil and gas, causing widespread economic uncertainty. They demand an immediate end to the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the U.S. attacks on Iran.
Notable signatories include professors, writers, analysts, and political commentators such as Krishna Pokharel, Ram Karki, Hari Roka, Khagendra Sangraula, Jhalak Subedi, Yug Pathak, and others.
